MAJOR REPAIRS
AT WINDSOR
TERRACE
A
MAJOR repair project to strengthen the retaining
wall at Windsor Terrace was carried out over the
summer after movement was detected in the structure.
The wall supports Windsor Terrace alongside the River
Lym and helps protect this important route through
Lyme Regis.
Rebuilding of the wall at Windsor Terrace
The Hippo Dam and pump in situ
The Dorset Council scheme involved rebuilding the most
affected section of the wall and strengthening other
areas where material beneath the structure had been
lost over time.
A large temporary water-filled barrier, known as a Hippo
Dam, along with a pump was used to create a dry
working area within the river.
This project was particularly challenging due to the
restricted working space, which limited the possible
repair solutions and the machinery that could access the
site.

In addition, materials could not be stored beside the site
and instead had to be kept further along the road and
transported to the work area when needed.
All work within the river was completed before the
end of September, helping to secure the structure
and protect this section of retaining wall for years to
come.
The affected section of Windsor Terrace was closed
uring the works to allow repairs to be carried out safely.
A key priority was completing as much underpinning
work as possible while access to the river was
available.
Dorset Council would like to say a huge thank you to
the community for its patience and understanding
while this essential work took place.
PARTNERS WORKING
TOGETHER TO SECURE
THE FUTURE OF THE COBB
C
ONSTRUCTION work to protect the future of The
Cobb is expected to start in 2028, Dorset Council
has confirmed.
Work is continuing behind the scenes to develop plans
to protect the Grade I Listed structure.
A partnership working group, bringing together Dorset
Council, Dorset Coast Forum, Historic England, Natural
England and Environment Agency, is helping to shape
the project and ensure The Cobb remains protected
while continuing to support the local community,
businesses and visitors.
Dorset Council has appointed engineering consultancy
Ramboll to develop the scheme and take it through the
design and approvals process.
Further investigations and surveys will take place
over the coming months to inform detailed designs
and support the statutory applications needed for a
structure of this significance.
Part of the work on The Cobb can only be carried out
during the summer months. The planned start date
for the main construction work is 2028.
The partnership group will continue to meet as plans
progress, and updates will be shared with residents,
businesses and stakeholders throughout the project.
