residents of Lyme to get involved
in and meet new people.
In the earlier days of Kathrens
Knitwear, both Nicca and her
sister Mandy were heavily
involved in mentoring textiles
students from Woodroffe School,
offering work experience
placements to young artists and
teaching them not only how to
make something creative, but how
to price their work for sale.
Students9 pieces were displayed in
the shop window, with half of the
profits going to the student and
half going to a charity of their
choice.
Nicca thought her acting days
were behind her, until she was
approached by former Marine
Theatre director, Clemmie
Reynolds, and asked to perform in
the community production of 8The
Tempest of Lyme9, written by
Andrew Rattenbury and
performed in 2016, which won a
National Outstanding
Achievement Award and brought
together a cast and crew of over
60 local residents to celebrate the
town9s seafaring history.
More recently, Nicca directed the
community play 8A Midsummer
Lyme9s Dream9, which won the
8Best Walking Party9 at the Lyme
Regis Carnival in 2024.
Now, as the new chapter of
Gallery Kathrens Knitwear
commences, what Nicca makes is
no longer limited to clothing. The
catalyst for expansion was a family
exhibition held in Lyme Regis at
the Malthouse Gallery last year.
Nicca comes from an extremely
creative family, who organised the
exhibition to bring generations of
their work together, including that
of her mother, who is now 98 and
living with dementia.
It became both a celebration of
the family and a tribute to the
woman Nicca credits with creating
its independent spirit.
